Vienna Walking Tours: Self-Guided Routes Through Imperial and Musical Vienna

2026-10-14 · Viena

Viena

Vienna is an imperial capital you can cross in an afternoon

Vienna rewards walking because its history sits so close together. In one morning you pass from a Gothic cathedral to the winter palace of the Habsburgs, then out to a boulevard built for a new age of museums and opera.

  1. In 1857 Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the old city walls torn down. In their place came the Ringstrasse, a four-kilometer boulevard lined with the Opera, the Parliament, City Hall and the great museums, all finished in a few decades.
  2. Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and the Strauss family all worked within a short walk of St. Stephen's. Mozart wrote The Marriage of Figaro in the apartment on Domgasse that is now the Mozarthaus.
  3. The coffeehouse is a daily habit, not a museum piece. Since 2011 UNESCO has listed Viennese coffeehouse culture as intangible heritage, and you can still sit for hours over one coffee and a newspaper without anyone rushing you.

What to eat

Wiener Schnitzel

Wiener Schnitzel — Veal beaten thin, breaded and fried in lard or butter became the city's signature in the 19th century, and the plate-sized version is a point of pride at Figlmüller.

Sachertorte

Sachertorte — Sixteen-year-old apprentice Franz Sacher created this chocolate cake with apricot jam for Prince Metternich in 1832; the recipe is still guarded at Hotel Sacher.

Apfelstrudel — Paper-thin pulled dough came to Vienna through the Habsburg lands in Hungary and the Balkans, and every coffeehouse serves it warm.

Tafelspitz — Boiled beef with apple horseradish and chive sauce was Emperor Franz Joseph's favorite dish and is still a Sunday classic.

Before you go

Wear comfortable shoes: the Old Town is compact, but cobblestones and palace halls add up.
Visit Schönbrunn and the Hofburg right at opening time, before the tour groups arrive.
Palace, museum, cathedral tower and Spanish Riding School entries are paid separately, so book the busy ones online.
A 24-hour or 48-hour Wiener Linien ticket covers trams, the U-Bahn and buses between walks.

Don't forget the ticket

If you want the inside, buy it before you go. The walk still works from the street.
